Baylor’s Rhodes charged with marijuana possession

Robbie Rhodes, a 20-year-old wide receiver for the Baylor Bears, was arrested on Friday, May 2, on charges of “marijuana possession and tampering with evidence,” according to reports on

Rhodes is currently free on bonds “totaling $4,000,” after he was arrested near Clay Ave. and 18th St. in Waco for “failure to signal a lane change.”

Following a search of Rhodes’ vehicle due to a “heavy odor of marijuana,” officers found five grams of cannabis under the front seat, according to police reports.

“We are aware of the situation, but have no additional comment at this time,” Nick Joos, Baylor’s executive associate athletic director for external affairs, told KWTX.

Rhodes, who is majoring in physical education and was a blue chip recruit out of Fort Worth’s Southwest High School, garnered 157 yards on 10 receptions for the Bears in 2013.

Although this may be a setback for the sophomore receiver, Rhodes can look to examples such as Clemson’s Sammy Watkins as inspiration to bounce back and make a name for himself.

Watkins, who faced legal issues surrounding marijuana in 2012, is predicted to be a first round pick in the upcoming 2014 NFL Draft.

Baylor returns to the gridiron on Sept. 27, 2014, at Iowa State following a remarkable 2013 season that saw the Bears soar to an 11-2 overall record (8-1 in conference play) and a Big 12 championship.

The Bears concluded last season in a high-scoring 52-42 setback to UCF in the Fiesta Bowl.
